it is random, like Gildor said - the only place it really drops more is in pre-searing

Pre-Searing is the best place to get dyes...
Everytime I make a new character, I get about 2-3 silver dyes and maybe 1 black dye. It's a sort of balancing thing I guess.

Search button is no longer usuable at the moment. Use the thread created by Savio at the top to find questions already answered to great extent.
Thanks man.

Go to Nolion or however it's spelt aka Academy and farm them at the gate.

The fastest way is with EoE, I use my Warrior with 14 in axe, 12 in Beast, rest in STR. Cyclone them and watch them drop from EoE. It's about a 15 second run for me. The best way to get black dyes is to farm the weakest monsters in big numbers if you can, such as the gargs outside the Academy.

For what it is worth I was shocked - during the candy cane trade in days - how often dye fell as I soloed around Nolani gathering gargolye heads to trade for canes.

I gathered about 500 candy canes but also had many dye drops, including two blacks in that area.

So it appears that soloing very low level areas is a smart idea when looking for dye. That makes sense. You will not get high level drops there so the game may be set up to compensate for that by dropping more dye.
